PEDS’ KidsWalk Program was a successful Safe Routes initiative implemented in some 15 metro Atlanta schools. KidsWalk and other programs like it were so effective that the Federal Government started a national Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program with funding for each state.
Now, the Georgia Department of Transportation runs Georgia’s SRTS Program. The goal is to increase the number of children in grades K-8 who bicycle and walk to school by 1) increasing awareness, 2) developing locally-driven and supported programs and 3) improving bicycling and walking conditions near qualifying schools.
