Since our founding in 1996, PEDS has worked to make metro Atlanta safe and accessible for all pedestrians.

  • Presented workshops on pedestrian facilities design to more than 400 transportation engineers, planners and community activists. (1998 – present) Photo at right –>
  • Engaged some 6,000 households in over 150 metro Atlanta neighborhoods in a yard sign campaign encouraging drivers to slow down. (2005 – 2008)
  • Educated contractors and government officials about Americans with Disabilities Act compliance issues. (2007 – present)
  • Held the Annual Golden Shoe Awards Celebrations recognizing pedestrian-friendly projects, people and places. (2000 – present)

  • Collaborated with Community Improvement Districts on various pedestrian improvements. (1997 – present)
  • Generated intense media attention to pedestrian issues. (1997 – present)
  • Helped Cobb County develop a comprehensive Safe Routes to School plan. (11/2008)
  • Created radio PSAs and ads on gas pump handles to increase drivers’ awareness of laws protecting pedestrians. (10/2008)
  • Prompted the City of Atlanta to hold utility companies accountable for fixing hazardous utility wires. (04/2008)

  • Created a cutting-edge anti-speeding ad, which played on movie screens, cable TV and online. (06/2007)
  • Prompted Georgia DOT to consider using innovative HAWK signals at dangerous crosswalks. (2007)
  • Engaged the Hispanic community in promoting pedestrian safety on Buford Highway. (05/2006)
  • Prompted the Atlanta Regional Commission to incorporate needs of seniors into mainstream transportation planning. (07/2005)
  • Launched an innovative online tool for reporting 16 types of pedestrian hazards. (02/2005)
  • Trained police officers from 20 jurisdictions on crosswalk laws and pedestrian safety enforcement. (2002 – 2006)

  • Convinced Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin to create a Walkable Atlanta Task Force. (01/2004)
  • Inspired GDOT to publish a Pedestrian and Streetscape Design Guidebook. (09/2003)
  • Got the City of Atlanta to increase fines for parking on sidewalks. (07/2002)

  • Convinced GDOT to include a shade structure to designs for the 17th Street Bridge. (05/2001)
  • Got GDOT to approve in-street crosswalks signs reading “State Law: Stop for Pedestrians in Crosswalk.” (04/2001)
  • Assisted with the passage of legislation authorizing the use of cameras to ticket red-light runners. (03/2001)
  • Prompted the City of Atlanta to install pedestrian activated signals on West Peachtree Street. (01/2001)
  • Launched a Pace Car program that encouraged drivers to slow down. (01/2001)
