To encourage a better balance between people and cars, PEDS annually honors projects, programs and people that have contributed significantly toward making metro Atlanta safer and more accessible for all pedestrians.

PEDS 2012 Golden Shoe Awards Honorees:

Pedestrian-Friendly Events: Atlanta Streets Alive by Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, for activating the streets

Pedestrian-friendly Public Art: Living Walls, for promoting new perspectives on public space

 Pedestrian-friendly Suburban Retrofit: City of Duluth, Roundabout and Sidewalks, for making way for walkers

Pedestrian-friendly Traffic Operations: City of Roswell, Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacon at Centennial High School, for installing cost-effective crosswalk improvements

Pedestrian-friendly Research: Urban Land Institute Center for Leadership, City of Atlanta Sidewalk Maintenance mini-Technical Analysis Project, for confirming the high cost of piecemeal maintenance

Pedestrian-friendly Journalism: Jeremiah McWilliams, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, for shining a spotlight on what needs fixing

Pedestrian-friendly Activism: Brookwood Hills Civic Association, for mobilizing community support to replace broken sidewalks

Pedestrian-friendly Trail: Atlanta BeltLine Inc., Eastside Trail, for creating a magnet for walking and compact development

Pedestrian-friendly Policy Change: Georgia Department of Transportation Complete Streets Policy, for completing the streets
